Marketing Consultancy BUSINESS PLAN This plan describes an effort to launch a business on an international scale. Because of the nature of the business, the plan considers the businesss positioning in the world marketplace and the heavy competition already in the arena. This plan was compiled using Business Plan Pro, by Palo Alto Software .
BUSINESS MARKETINGNATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BUSINESS MARKETThe first obvious difference is that there are significantly fewer customers in the business market than in the consumer market. These customers also buy in significantly larger quantities (e.g., tires by the thousands) and the prices of some of their single item purchases far exceed those of an individual consumer (e.g., millions of dollars for a new bridge). Finally, business customers in the same industry often tend to be located in a concentrated geographic region. For example, the Silicon Valley in California has a high concentration of firms in the high-tech industry.

Zyflamend

Columbia University Medical Center has
launched the first clinical trial of a possible herbal preventative for
prostate cancer. The Phase I study will determine whether Zyflamend#174;, an
herbal supplement commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, can prevent
prostate cancer in patients with prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PIN).

“Zyflamend has shown an ability, in vitro, to reduce prostate cancer cell
proliferation by as much as 78 percent and to induce cancer cell death or
apoptosis,” says Aaron E. Katz, M.D., associate professor of urology at
Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Director of the
Center of Holistic Urology at Columbia University Medical Center and
principal investigator of the study. “These results are exceptionally
promising and have led us to initiate this clinical trial.”

The herbal supplement, made by New Chapter, Inc., is composed of 10 herbs
which inhibit the cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inflammation pathway. Long-term
chronic inflammation contributes to carcinogenesis in many organ systems
(the origin of certain cancers); inhibiting this pathway appears to be key
to preventing cancers like prostate and colon cancer. An herbal supplement
such as this herbal supplement may inhibit this pathway without causing the
adverse gastrointestinal side effects associated with the long-term use of
other COX-2 inhibitors. The preparation of this herbal supplement differs
from many herbal products in that it is not standardized to isolated
chemicals. It delivers herbs in concentrated form, but the herbs retain
their “food” status.

In this, the year Paul McCartney turns 64, a new wave of senior citizens is upon us. Dont use that term, though. Seasoned citizens, is the new label du jour for aging Baby Boomers and members of the Silent Generation? And its true: look at Madonna, who has fewer crows feet and fat rolls than a 20-year-old club hopper. And what about Mick Jagger, prancing around on stage at the Superbowl with more vitality than a sex-starved teenager? It makes sense to begin with something basic: food. Simple changes can make a big impact on health, says Karen Collins, a spokesperson for the American Institute for Cancer Research (MCR). For example, eat five fruits and vegetables every day and cut your cancer risk by 20 percent. Grains, fruits and vegetables should cover two-thirds of the plate, according to the organizations brochure, Nutrition After 50. The other third should be protein (preferably not red meat).
NEW YORK — Data from the Columbia University Department of Urology demonstrates that Zyflamend(R), a unique herbal extract preparation, suppresses the growth of prostate cancer cells and induces prostate cancer cells to self-destruct via a process called apoptosis. The research confirms Zyflamend(R) has COX-1 and COX-2 anti-inflammatory effects, although its anti-cancer affects against prostate cancer were independent of COX-2 inhibition, supporting the postulation that some prostate cancer cells are not affected by COX-2 inflammation. These results were particularly surprising and show great promise in the fight against prostate cancer, said researcher Dr. Debra L. Bemis of the Columbia University Department of Urology. We hope that the magnitude of benefits shown in this research will be confirmed in the larger scale trial already in progress.

Overheard at the Reform Club dining room the other day, as a lady diner was ordering her pudding: Diner: Please can you bring coffee with my pudding. Waitress: Im afraid coffee is only served in the lounge. D: Then can you send someone to the lounge to get a cup of coffee and bring it in here with my pudding. W: Im afraid coffee is only served and drunk in the lounge.
CoffeeA driving force behind coffees global popularity is its caffeine content: a six-ounce (2.72 kilograms) cup of coffee contains 100 milligrams of caffeine, more than comparable amounts of tea (50 milligrams), cola (25 milligrams), or cocoa (15 milligrams). Caffeine, an alkaloid that occurs naturally in coffee, is a mild stimulant that produces a variety of physical effects. Because caffeine stimulates the cortex of the brain, people who ingest it experience enhanced concentration. Athletes are sometimes advised to drink coffee prior to competing, as caffeine renders skeletal muscles less susceptible to exhaustion and improves coordination. However, these benefits accrue only to those who consume small doses of the drug. Excessive amounts of caffeine produce a host of undesirable consequences, acting as a diuretic, stimulating gastric secretions, upsetting the stomach, contracting blood vessels in the brain (people who suffer from headaches are advised to cut their caffeine intake), and causing overacute sensation, irregular heartbeat, and trembling. On a more serious level, many researchers have sought to link caffeine to heart disease, benign breast cysts, pancreatic cancer, and birth defects. While such studies have proven inconclusive, health official nonetheless recommend that people limit their coffee intake to fewer than four cups daily or drink decaffeinated varieties.

Although were still analyzing the proposals, theres no question that a fair reading is that they would be extremely damaging to telemarketing, says DMA VP, government relations Jim Conway. Its almost as if the FTC were drawing a line in the sand–trying to regulate telemarketing out of business. These proposals will be a rallying point for the industry. DMA president and CEO Robert Wientzen stressed that the proposals jeopardize more than 6 million telemarketing jobs and $668 billion in annual U.S. sales. Magazine Publishers of America, which was also still studying the proposals, stated that its comments, when released, would seek to insure that the right balance between consumer protection and efficient business practices is maintained. However, the MPA did note that, during the Congressionally mandated TSR review process that began in 2000, it had expressed its view that the existing TSR works well, that major changes are not necessary, and that the current, company-by-company do-not-call mechanism provides maximum choice to consumers. Written comments are due to the FTC by the end of this month, with public forums slated for June 5-7. A final ruling could be issued by the end of the year, with implementation starting as early as next year.

Plumber Germantown

The Finnish plumbers and the employers in the industry have approved the proposal for a new collective agreement that will be in force until January 2005. ((Comments on this story may be sent to nbr.feedback@nordicbusinessreport.com))
Sir: So for plumbers, “only the time on the customers premises {is} chargeable” (letter, 1 July)? Around here, plumbers and washing-machine repair men charge a pounds 30-40 call-out fee. At the two-to-three jobs per day quoted by Lois Wakeman, this “reality” sounds better than marking exam scripts, in spite of all the other benefits enjoyed by teachers in their well-paid, well-resourced, high status profession. ROLAND MILES Redhill, Surrey
The case of the incontinent plumber has caught the public imagination this week. In a rather dashing sting operation, some Trading Standards officers from Surrey have secretly filmed a number of tradesmen at work and have found that a quarter were involved in something dodgy. There were cases of massive over-charging, fake documentation and dangerous work. One engineer was filmed looking for a gas leak with a naked flame. Perhaps for mucky, Freudian reasons, we tend to be fascinated by the plumbing business. A family gathering in the country a few years back was made particularly memorable by the moment when a blocked pipe between the house and the septic tank caused a foul bubbling to issue from the earth in a scene that might have come out of an old horror movie. The local plumber - retired but happy to help out at such times - was called out. As, puffing on his pipe (he was a genuinely happy plumber), he went about his work with plungers and brushes, the family gathered around the window to watch. It was a satisfying, oddly purging experience.

FILM The makers of The Corporation, could not have timed the film any better, coming as it does in a year when using cheap suppliers abroad and corporate social responsibility (CSR) have been big issues in supply chain management.
S CORPORATIONIn Choosing a Legal Structure for Your Business , Stuart Handmaker explains that Essentially, there isnt any difference between a C corporation and an S corporation. Each of them is a corporation, and each one has the same characteristics, shareholders, directors, officers, records, minute books, problems, and the like. The only real difference is that the S corporation has filed a special form with the Internal Revenue Service stating that it wants to be an S corporation. What makes the S corporation different from the C corporation, then, is that it has special status in the eyes of the IRS. In short, the S corporation is viewed as a partnership or sole proprietorship for taxation purposes. This means that the corporation itself is not taxed, as C corporations are; rather the S corporations profits are passed on to its shareholders, who pay income tax on that money. In nearly all other respects, though, the S corporation is essentially the same as the C corporation. Most importantly, S corporations receive the benefit of limited liability that goes along with being a corporation. The combined benefits of limited liability (the lack of which is the main drawback of partnerships or sole proprietorships) and avoidance of double taxation (the main drawback of C corporations) makes the S corporation the most popular legal structure amongst small business owners.

Faced with the rapidly shifting, often harsh realities of managed care, medical educators across the nation are training more doctors outside of hospitals and adding new courses in economics, ethics, law, and even how to document treatment decisions. “Its an interesting phenomenon because medical schools in the past have not generally been about economics and business,” said John McCahn, associate dean of academic affairs at Boston University Medical School. “All of a sudden we have to deal with the notion that students cannot walk out of our doors totally naive about the world in which they will be working.” Mary Lee, dean of educational affairs at the four-year-old Managed Care Institute of the Tufts University Medical School, said the change has a philosophical dimension as well. “The students coming in today understand there is a shifting and expanded role for the physician,” she said. “We have a responsibility to. get them thinking about what ideal managed care should be, so they can go out and try to attain that goal.” The changes take many forms. A course in public health at BU for first-year medical students, for instance, now includes a section on law and medicine taught by a researcher in health-care economics. At Harvard Medical School, among many other institutions, there is an emphasis on “health- policy training” and on teaching ethics because todays doctors routinely have to weigh costs against benefits in ways that previous generations did not. And at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, all third-year medical students must attend a two-day symposium at which issues relating to managed care are taught and discussed. Comparable course additions and alterations are becoming commonplace across the nation. Moreover, in a strong indication that the new approach is taking hold, the American Association of Medical Schools last year began sending out recommendations for broad curriculum changes that incorporate many of the fiscal, ethical and procedural realities of managed care. “This certainly is the biggest shift in medical education in decades, at least. and maybe since the early part of the century,” said Gregory Pawlson, associate director for health affairs at George Washington University Medical Center. In one telling departure from the past, a growing number of medical students — including at BU — are now taught to document their decisions and actions in detailed ways, and for reasons, that didnt exist before. In managed-care practices, such records typically become part of a communal pool of data that can be used for medical purposes by other doctors — a practice praised even by critics of managed care. But there is concern about another use for such records: Insurance firms and corporate executives review them, in part to help assess the performance and set the salaries of individual doctors. The most dramatic changes in medical education are taking place in on-the-job training, as students spend more time learning at outpatient facilities like managed-care offices, rather than in emergency rooms and elsewhere in hospitals.
AN EXTRA 1,000 medical school places are to be created over the next seven years to head off a projected shortage of doctors in the millennium, ministers announced yesterday. The increase of a fifth - equivalent to a new medical school - will take the annual number of new doctors being trained in Britain from 5,000 to 6,000. The committee estimated that the demand for doctors will rise at 1.7 per cent per year over the next 20 years, similar to the trend in the last 20 years. It said that an increase of 1,000 in the annual medical student intake would not produce a domestic oversupply by the year 2020 “under any realistic scenario”.

“The Network Marketing industry is
difficult to navigate. It is very easy to find yourself in a business that
leaves you disappointed. Knowing what to look for is critical,” says Bo
Short. Short is the president of the American Leadership Foundation and
formerly CEO of a network marketing company.

Among his many activities, he has authored two highly acclaimed books on
leadership and has spoken in 20 countries on the topics of leadership, team
building and success. He has also been involved in the Network Marketing
industry for 15 years and has built a network of distributors that has
spanned the globe.

“People oftentimes blame themselves for failing in a network marketing
business even though they do not understand the possible negative aspects
of the company they may be involved with. Just because you had a bad
experience does not mean that there is something wrong with you nor is
every company in the industry flawed. Dont give up. Educate yourself and
reengage,” Short states.

After attaining the diamond level in Amway/Quixtar he resigned his position
and income. Short said, “I refused to represent a business I no longer
believed in.” He subsequently appeared on “Dateline NBC” in a national
television expose discussing his insights and experiences in that business.

The trend towards replacing application-specific networks with converged networks continues, with IP telephony the one killer application that is driving sales. To underline the point, in 2000 there were fewer than 500,000 IP telephony ports installed worldwide. That figure was expected to have reached 11.5 million by the end of 2004, according to Avaya, a network equipment provider. Bandwidth is also becoming cheaper and more widely available. Advisory group Gartner predicts that from 2004 to 2008, companies will increase bandwidth by 40% to 100% each year, in the process changing the way that humans interact and removing location from the equation altogether.

Understanding your legal obligations in an increasingly regulated business environment. Theres probably never been more attention paid to concerns raised over many of the legal issues facing small and medium business enterprises; but while the Government is listening to SMEs, and Small Business Minister John Tamihere has promised changes in a number of areas, these wont happen overnight. Both lawyers deal with the legal challenges confronting SMEs on a daily basis. And both point out that many of the issues which see SMEs seeking legal advice, are as much related to business management as they are to the law.

Thousands of cancer sufferers are being denied life-saving drugs because of delays and bureaucracy in making them available on the NHS. The hold-ups are a matter of life and death for desperate people who have been diagnosed with cancer of the breast, colon or lung, or with a brain tumour. Doctors are furious that drugs such as Avastin, which is used to treat colon cancer, and Ce-tuximab, a treatment for head and neck cancers, are being blocked by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice), a government-appointed quango set up to decide which drugs should be routinely prescribed on the NHS.
Cancer PO Box 189, Gabriola Island, BC, Canada, V0R 1X0
C ANCER The scope of the problem in the United States is large. Some 1.2 million people were diagnosed with potentially fatal cancer in the year 2000. Of these, 59 percent were expected to live for at least five years (in some, the cancer may be continuously present for more than five years) with or without evidence of cancer. People of all ages, from birth to advanced age, can manifest cancer, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. In children cancer is unusual, but it has consistently been the leading cause of death from disease. As mortality rates from cardiovascular disease decline, the proportion of cancer deaths increases. It is anticipated that the mortality rate from cancer will surpass that from heart disease by the year 2050. Direct and indirect financial costs of cancer in the United States for the year 2000 were $178 billion.Developing countries represented 80 percent of the worlds approximately 6 billion people in the year 2000. In these countries, cancer has grown from a minor public health issue in the early 1990s to a rapidly expanding problem by the beginning of the twenty-first century. The emergence of a middle class, with attendant changes in lifestyle, increased longevity and exposure to potential carcinogens, and expectations of improved medical delivery systems have fueled the growing impact of cancer in the third world. The financial resources and socio-medical infrastructure needed to diagnose and treat, much less screen and prevent these cancers, are lacking in the developing world.

National Semiconductor Inc., Santa Clara, Calif., has taken one step closer to making its long-awaited WebPad handheld internet devices a reality. At Fall Comdex 99, the company introduced a reference design for OEMs to use to build full-featured WebPads. The WebPad could be Nationals first successful venture into the world of information appliances. The company is focusing on this area and has targeted three segments — set-top boxes, thin-client servers and Internet-access devices. We are pushing toward making information appliances the next big thing in electronics, said James Colgan, marketing manager for the Internet Access Device Business Unit at National.

Three blue bin-bags containing severed human limbs have been found in a Cologne suburb in the space of two days. Police said there was no evidence of any link with a suspected serial killer in Belgium who recently terrorised Mons, where bin-bags containing body parts have also been found. Reuters - Cologne
“If we were to forbid everything, then wed never get things under control. To stop it entirely would be crazy. Im sure that there would be much more rape.” “Relaxation around the clock” is promised at the Eros Centre in a quiet street just north of the city centre. A notice in six languages warns: “The carrying of drugs or weapons in the establishment is forbidden. Offenders will be handed over to the police.” A DM5 entrance fee ( pounds 2) allows the customer through the turnstile into the low-lit lobby-cum-bar. A couple of dozen women sit chatting, waiting for customers.
WHY GO NOW? Eating, drinking and shopping: those seem to be the main interests of the locals in what is arguably Germanys friendliest big city. The breadth and depth of cuisine overturns the notion that eating out in Germany can be a bleak prospect, and the local beer should win over the most devoted oenophile. Colognes cultural wealth, also transcends the citywide reconstruction that is taking place.

By selecting the proper plants, bloom can be scheduled over an extended period. This progression can be provided by using bulbs, perennial flowers, annual flowers and woody ornamentals (trees, shrubs, vines). Hardy bulbs and early spring flowering trees and shrubs provide early season interest. There are not many summer blooming woody ornamentals to complement other flowering plants — but there are a notable few. Best known of the summer flowering trees is the golden-rain tree. It is noted for its large, conspicuous yellow flower clusters that appear in July. These flowers are followed by showy fruit that hangs like clusters of small Chinese lanterns until late in the fall. Because of its spreading habit of growth, the golden-rain tree is one of the best small shade trees. It is adapted to many soil types and has few insect or disease problems (but it is a favored host plant for the red-shouldered box elder bugs that can be a seasonal nuisance in spring and fall).
Based on examples from history, ethnography, religious studies, the classics, folklore, ethnobotany, and medicine. The geographic area covered is vast, extending from Europe through the Near East, to India and China. Plants covered include holy basil (Hinduisms most sacred plant), fig trees (sacred in India), pipal, banyan, urd, mandrake, ginseng, garlic, and onions. Physical characteristics that contribute to the plants ritual roles are identified and discussed. Extensive bibliography and index.

In the eyes of our lawmakers, computer software is considered an intangible asset. Under our tax rules today, the cost of all intangible assets acquired by a sales agency as part of the purchase of a business are now amortizable as intangible assets. Previously, those intangible assets were required to be capitalized but could not be claimed as a tax deduction unless they had a readily determinable life. However, when it comes to the costs of developing software (for the sales agencys own use or for sale or lease to others), the agency has a choice: those costs may either be deducted as an immediate expense or amortized over a five-year period (or shorter if it can be established as appropriate). Remember, however, the key is that the costs must be treated consistently. For purchases of computer software, specifically those costs which are not amortizable over 15 years as a Section 197 intangible asset, costs are depreciated using the straight-line method over three years beginning in the month it is placed in service.
This paper, then, addresses educational software and its earliest entries - those made for mainframe computers, and follows its discursive growth to that of the personal computer and its runic lustihood. Those products that exploit the computer chip to its fullest, like interactive, hypermedia authoring software, stand out. But other, more mundane products, like spreadsheets, word processing programs and databases, also have their place in the tableau. The third great revolution - computers and high technology (the first being agriculture and the second the industrial revolution) - has already fundamentally altered life for the better, at least for people in the post-industrialized world. This dramatic shift, as complex and challenging as it is, is really only an elaboration of the Babylonian-developed abacus (The New Encyclopedia Britanica, 1992). The abacus, in use for several millennia, automated arithmetic calculation. That the development of the abacus into its electronic counterpart took one or two millennia points out the sea change of scientific and technical innovation that was needed for such growth.

POWAY — Ted Waitt had his eureka moment over a baccarat table two years ago at Comdex, the technology trade show in Las Vegas. His computer company, Gateway Inc., was hemorrhaging money and becoming an also-ran against Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. Waitt and a longtime supplier began talking about the flat-panel TVs that were turning up in high-end consumer electronics showrooms. They were sleek enough to hang on living-room walls like paintings and offered sharper images than standard tube TVs. But with prices starting around $5,000, few people could afford them.

After seeing the picture on page 75 of the October 2005 issue, I beg the question, What on Earth were you thinking?! publishing such a spectacle for the world to see. The photo of target practice to end the life of a defenseless and otherwise benign beast sends all the wrong messages about guns and those who own and use them. I was particularly dismayed because it gives gun owners and users the reputation as senseless takers of life for no other reason but for target practice. Shame on the ones using their weapons this way!

)) Ocean Commission: Third Public Meeting. The commission held its third public meeting, the southeast regional meeting, January 15-16, 2002, at the College of Charleston in Charleston, South Carolina. This was the first in a series of nine regional public meetings the commission will hold around the nation. The southeast regional meeting provided regional, state and local government agencies and non-governmental organizations the opportunity to discuss with the commission ocean and coastal issues of interest or concern to the southeastern region of the United States, encompassing the area from Delaware to Georgia. In addition to the public meetings on January 15 and 16, the commissioners spent January 14 gaining first hand knowledge of important regional issues through site visits in Annapolis, Maryland, and Charleston, South Carolina. The commission will use the information received at the meeting to help formulate its recommendations for a coordinated and comprehensive national ocean policy, as required by the Oceans Act of 2000. )) Coast Guard Runs Ship Interception Drill; U.S. Navy Plays Key Roll. The U.S. Coast Guard and Navy recently tested the process for intercepting a rogue ship trying to enter San Diego Bay. The drill significantly improved the protection of the port. The test involved two Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteer vessels testing the port security system by posing as hostile vessels heading for San Diego Bay. The Navy identified and tracked the vessels as they approached the bay. The 110-foot Coast Guard Cutter Long Island then intercepted each vessel, boarding one and simulating the use of force to stop the other vessel. Since September 11, the Coast Guard and Navy have improved the port security procedures to protect San Diego Bay from a rogue ship attack. According to the Coast Guard, this drill tested these improved procedures to ensure that the necessary level of force can be used in time to defend against a hijacked commercial vessel being used as a weapon against the port. Lessons learned from this drill will be applied to further improve port security. The results of the drill and the details of the Navys involved units cannot be released for national security reasons. )) Northrop Grumman Announces Completion of Merger With Newport News Shipbuilding. First, a warning: If youre an ad agency or sound production house and youre not sure if the sound-alike version of Smells Like Teen Spirit youve just recorded (because the client didnt want to pay for the song rights) steps over the line of copyright breach, then err on the side of caution and check it out. Truth be told these copyrights are the only thing that the labels can count on for long-term cashflow and they will protect their rights aggressively. And you dont even need to misappropriate their music to cross the line, just the lyrics will do. Witness Whitcoulls using the line, How many stores would have an offer like that? Not many, if any in a recent campaign. While it appears to be an adaptation of Scribes line, How many dudes you know roll like this? Not many, if any, Whitcoulls, remarkably, argued that they had not infringed copyright.

There has always been a search for a cure. Ancient remedies for baldness included dogs paws, asses hooves, urine, burned prickles of a hedgehog immersed in oil, boiling snakes alive, chicken dung and herbal concoctions. Centuries later, blistering of the scalp with acids, onion and honey massages, ground snail and horse leech potions, vacuum cap suction, electrodes, scalp popping and assorted other tortures. Modern times brought us vitamins, hormone injections and more elixirs and creams than hairs on the average head. Men have been willing to be gulled, deceived and deluded since the advent of society. American men spend 200 million dollars annually trying to combat the loss of the foremost symbol of strength and vigor. Celebrities and politicians have fallen under the spell of the magic cure. Products with names like Hair Again, Mo-Hair, New Generation, Growth Plus and Thrive have proliferated. America is awash with growth potions, prompting the FDA to remark, it is a lot of stuff that defies analysis. Thank goodness the medical professionals have stepped in to stem the tide of trickery. Beyond the familiar body-boosting hair care lines, there are medical solutions with clinically proven results including topical and oral medications and surgical hair transplantation. Ken Washenik, M.D., Ph.D., Medical Director of Bosley and faculty member of the New York University School of medicine, one of the worlds most recognized research scientists in the field of dermatology and hair restoration, recognizes that we are embarking on a new era in the treatment and prevention of hair loss, including hair multiplication in the lab. The hair care industry must realize the need to look at the problem as a medical as well as aesthetic problem. While hair loss is not life-threatening, it is a `dis-ease, a life-affecting condition that causes discomfort and interrupts ones quality of life. Hair transplantation surgery is a good option for those who are unable to cope psychologically with hair loss.
The scalp also appears normal in children with alopecia areata, but this condition produces a clearly circumscribed area of complete hair loss bordered by pathognomonic exclamation point hairs that are wider at the tip than close to the scalp. Hair loss that is secondary to dermatophyte scalp infection (tinea capitis) is associated with inflammation and scaling of the scalp with broken infected hairs either at the scalp level or close to the hair root. The scalp may appear to have black dots, which are caused by the stubble of broken hairs. Alopecia that is present from birth may result from in utero scarring (aplasia cutis) or nevus sebaceous, which has an orange, velvety appearance and becomes more prominent and wart-like during adolescence because of increased sebaceous activity.

* First Navy Cruiser to Begin Full Modernization. Ticonderoga-class cruiser USS Bunker Hill (CG 52) recently became the first guided-missile cruiser to begin combined hull, mechanical and electrical (HME) and combat systems upgrades as part of the U.S. Navys Guided Missile Cruiser/Guided Missile Destroyer Modernization Program. Twenty-two Ticonderoga -class cruisers and 62 Arleigh Burke-class destroyers will undergo a significant modernization to ensure these warships reach their projected 35-year service life, the Navy said. These ships will be fitted with stateof-the-art combat systems, HME and quality-of-life upgrades that will dramatically improve all areas of the ships functionality, officials continued. “Bunker Hill pulled into dry dock at BAE Systems [London, England] in San Diego [California] early in the morning of February 13,” said Evan Littig, senior surface combatant class manager for Team Ships. “The ship will get new software, systems and equipment that will modernize the ships combat capabilities, as well as improve crew working and living conditions.” Bunker Hill is scheduled to be in the shipyard for approximately one year. * U.S. Department of Transportation to Recycle Three More Ships. The U.S. Department of Transportations Maritime Administration has signed contracts totaling $1,136,106 for the recycling of three obsolete ships from its reserve fleets. All three ships will be recycled at the Esco Marine facility in Brownsville, Texas. Two of the ships, Cape Catoche and Cape Carthage, are in the James River Reserve Fleet site at Fort Eustis in Virginia. When they depart the James River site for recycling, they will be the 68th and 69th ships to do so since January 2001. The third ship, Del Viento, is in the Beaumont Reserve Fleet in Texas. “Each time we move an obsolete ship out, we make an important contribution to maintaining the local ecosystem,” said Maritime Administrator Sean T. Connaughton. The Cape Carthage and Cape Catoche are both break-bulk freighters, built at the Avondale shipyard in Alabama in 1963. The Del Viento, also a break-bulk freighter, was built at the lngalls Shipyard in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1968. The Maritime Administration keeps ships in three National Defense Reserve Fleet sites to support Armed Forces movements and to respond to national emergencies. * Crew Saves Fishing Vessel, Coast Guard Provides Escort to Dutch Harbor. Responding to a mayday call in late February, 136 miles northeast of Dutch Harbor, Alaska, U.S. Coast Guard cutter Alex Haley arrived on the scene as crew members from the fishing vessel Pacific Glacier were battling flames. After working through the night, the fire was reportedly contained at approximately 5 a.m. the next morning. “This appears to be an excellent fire response where the right training, proper equipment and never-give-up attitude came together with some good weather to keep this accident from becoming a tragedy,” said Kenneth Lawrenson, commercial fishing vessel safety coordinator for the 17th Coast Guard District. A Coast Guard H-65 Dolphin helicopter deployed aboard the Alex Haley, a Coast Guard H-60 Jayhawk helicopter deployed in St. Paul, Alaska, and a C-130 from Coast Guard Air Station Kodiak also responded. An investigation of the incident is being conducted by Coast Guard sector Anchorage. “The Coast Guard wants to insure that other fishing and processing vessels are able to learn lessons from this accident and keep themselves safe,” said Lawrenson.

We probably dont think that much about it when were listening to the radio either, but the sounds coming through on a TV or radio broadcast have many elements that either reinforce or replace the need for visuals. ITS a hairy problem! Dogs and cats lose their hair. Some shed a little, others shed a lot. But shedding is a fact of dog and cat life. Animals in the wild usually go through predictable hair growth cycles. They shed in the spring and grow a summer coat. Then in the fall they shed again and grow a winter coat. Hair is a non-living, protein-structure produced by hair follicles within the skin. Dogs and cats have three types of hairs. Their outer coat is made of long, coarse, “guard” hairs. These pigmented guard hairs produce the color of the animals coat and are also coated with water-repelling sebum.
Its a problem most often associated with men, but hair loss affects
30 million American women. In fact, one in four women will experience
hair loss by age 40–60 % by menopause. And until now there havent
been many options to treat hair loss for women. There are many causes of hair loss including heredity and illness and
as men and women age our bodies produce more DHT. Commonly know as
the bad testosterone, DHT in effect clogs our hair follicles causing
our hair to thin or fall out as we get older. Another cause of
thinning female hair: using harsh treatments such as tight braids,
bleaching and permanents. The effects of hair loss can be emotionally
devastating for some women, but there are ways to prevent hair loss
before it becomes a problem.

The combination of summer temperatures, a hot car overhead and lack of air movement make the pit an uncomfortable work environment. Except for summer temperatures, the new lift system eliminates those issues and Chad Sanders, store manager at a recently opened super-center in Palmetto, Fla., where the lifts are in place, said he expects employee morale in the Tire and Lube Express to benefit.
Sir: The RAC would be delighted to see more car sharing on non- tube-strike days (Letters, 31 July), however, our research shows there is a problem with the “Not in my front seat” syndrome. Our surveys suggest that car sharing is a good idea for everybody else but when it comes down to it the NIMFS mentality wins the day. For car sharing to work on a wider scale we need more incentives such as “high occupancy vehicle” lanes, preferential office parking for car sharers and a change of attitude. When I walk to work on the next strike day with a sign for “Trafalgar Square” hopefully some drivers will overcome the NIMFS syndrome and give me a lift.
The new car booster seat law doubled the rate of underlying sales growth at Mothercare in the past three months as families rushed to comply with the regulations. Without the lift from extra sales of car seats, like-for-like sales growth would have tailed off sharply during the retailers first half. Shares in the group fell 5.25p to 353p. “Given how difficult the retail environment is, we think this is a really strong performance,” Mr Gordon added. He said the groups prospects for Christmas depended on “whether the consumer plays or not”. In the first 28 weeks of its financial year, underlying sales rose 1.9 per cent.

NEW YORK — Looking for ways to promote his companys new rotary saw blades, Dave Fortin considered having Frisbees printed with the firms logo or getting some electronic greeting cards that sounded like a saw when opened. “We were looking for something that is a novelty item that our customers could use and would stay around for a while,” said Fortin, merchandise manager for Raleigh, N.C.-based Cooper Tools, maker of Nicholson saw blades. “They get a million pens and pads,” he said. “We were looking for something that would have that kind of lasting power.” Thousands of companies have gotten the same idea, turning the mouse pad into one of the most popular items sold by advertising novelty companies these days. “Im inundated with them,” said Herb Edelstein, a data networking consultant in Potomac, Md. “Its moving out from just the technology vendors into much more general advertising because everybody uses a computer.” There is no precise market research on mouse pads, apparently dismissed by statisticians because of their ubiquity. But the Advertising Specialty Institute, a promotional products industry group, informally estimates a doubling of mouse pad sales both this year and last. “Some early suppliers almost stumbled into this,” said Marvin Spike, president of the Langhorne, Pa.-based group. “As it became popular and established, suppliers who manufacture with similar materials just added it to their line.” Several large manufacturers said their business grew even faster in 1993 and 1994, but they note that more competitors have since jumped in. “Were seeing a lot more people come into the business,” said Roger Laudy, president of Image Matters Inc. in Winston-Salem, N.C., the firm that made the Cooper Tools mouse pad. The ASI counts 116 mouse pad makers. The most basic are simply a colored piece of foam rubber, in thicknesses from 1-16th- to 1/4-inch thick. More common are versions made with Neoprene, the stuff in diving suits, that are topped with polyester and printed with full-color graphics and even photographs. In the past two years, a new kind has emerged with a hard plastic called Lexan on top, which allows for higher-quality printing and fast traction. The most elaborate are cut in special shapes, such as the Cooper Tools saw or a wristwatch for Guess?, a tire for Goodyear and a stadium for the Phoenix Suns. “Were in the process of doing one shaped like a double burger,” said Mike Meath of Precision Line Inc., a mouse pad maker in Plymouth, Minn. Other variations have built-in calculators, transparent pockets to stow a photo or another document and inch-high wrist rests in the front. Office suppliers sell $20 mouse pads topped with leather and ready for a monogram. And some consumer gift catalogs offer to convert a persons photograph into a mouse pad for about $30. With the growing use of the World Wide Web as a marketing tool, companies from the makers of Jack Daniels whiskey to QVC have used mouse pads to keep their Web addresses in front of people. “Every company suddenly has a new need to create, buy and distribute advertising that constantly remind prospective clients of a new address thats not on a street but on the Internet,” ASIs Spike said. Though a mouse will usually work just fine without a mouse pad, many people like them because they set aside a regular place where the mouse can always be reached. In addition, a mouse pad can make a statement about a persons interests, becoming, like a screen saver, one of the few ways to personalize a PC. China Books, in San Franciscos Chinatown, sells a $9.95 Maos Pad, featuring a picture and quotations of the late Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung. It is also a popular item on the stores Web site, manager Godwin Chu said. Pleased by its success, Chu had a mouse pad made to commemorate the current Chinese year — the Year of the Rat.

Dont get me wrong. I like politics, I even like politics on television. At midnight I like nothing better than watching Andrew Neil chuckling over the events of the day with hollow-eyed MPs and hacks. Theres much to be enjoyed in Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday afternoons, even though at the moment we have a Leader of the Opposition who isnt especially good at asking questions and a Prime Minister who is especially good at not answering them. But I welcome the BBCs decision to remove live coverage of party political conferences from terrestrial television. For years, these annual tribal gatherings of the politically committed have turned viewers off politics, on to opposing parties, or on to another channel. During their long years in the wilderness, and for decades before that, the Labour Party had vibrant, argumentative debates in which a group of people, all espousing belief in the brotherhood of man, viciously attacked everyone and everything they did not happen to agree with. Year after year, stern trade unionists condemned even sterner party leaders; one wing of the party flapped at the other. Fear and loathing in Blackpool or Brighton.

Technology, naturally, is to blame. The simultaneous arrival of the mobile phone and laptop means theres no escape. The only solution for hard-pressed senior executives is to switch their phones off and claim they are in a location too remote for a signal. Business Editors/Health Medical Writers SAN JOSE, Calif.–(BW HealthWire)–July 29, 2002 Dr. Nidhi D. Sikka has acquired the dental practice of Dr. David N. Bench. The practice is located opposite San Jose Regional Medical Center (formerly Alexian Brothers Hospital) in San Jose.
Dr. Ayoubs selection is the result of a rigorous selection process that
includes an in depth look at the doctors collegiate and post-graduate
education, clinical skills and overall integrity. In order to be selected,
the dentist must have completed a minimum of 120 hours and three levels of
advanced clinical training from accredited post-graduate programs. “What
distinguishes our Mentors,” comments Garrett Caldwell, President of CCADS,
“is their comprehension and use of advanced clinical protocols for veneers
including all types of indirect all-ceramic and ceromer composite
restorations and their overall commitment to excellence in their
practices.”

Mentor-Instructors for CCADS have many responsibilities, including
conducting their own local study groups in their offices and instructing
nationally and internationally at seminars and live patient hands-on
programs. However, more important than their clinical duties is their
responsibility to the public and to any doctor who seeks assistance or
mentoring in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

Dr. Samir Ayoub graduated from the University of California, San Francisco
Dental School. He is a former student at the California Center for Advanced
Dental Studies (CCADS) hands-on aesthetic continuum where he is currently
the Course Director of the San Francisco program. He also instructed at
the Rosenthal Groups Aesthetic Advantage programs at NYU and London. He
maintains his private aesthetic practice in San Francisco, California.

GlamSmile[TM] is a revolutionary cosmetic dental system that substantially expands the consumer and professional dental market for veneers. To produce the veneers, Remedent utilizes high-tech scanning, CAD/CAM design technology, and a proprietary fabrication technique. They are then delivered to a dentist already prepared for a simple, single-motion veneer placement. This patent-pending delivery system not only dramatically lowers the dentists cost of installation, but also significantly reduces the amount of time patients spend in the dental chair. The result is unprecedented pricing for veneers which previously were only within the reach of affluent patients. Guy De Vreese, Chairman of Remedent, stated, We are very excited about this strategic relationship because our two companies share a common goal: quickly and effectively enhancing consumer smiles. It is extraordinary to witness the effect that whiter, more beautiful teeth can have on ones overall appearance and confidence. We are looking forward to working with the BriteSmile spas and the tens of thousands of consumers who seek their services every year. Dr Julian Feneley, CEO of BSML, said, The BriteSmile Professional Whitening Centers are uniquely positioned to accomplish the revolution of the veneer market that Remedents technology now offers. The customer response to date has been outstanding and we are excited to be able to offer perfect smiles to all those clients for whom veneers were previously unaffordable.
